How To Find The Brake Light Switch Wire For A 2022 Toyota Highlander For A Brake Controller Install

Published 08/25/2023

Question:

I just really need to know which wire I’m picking off of the brake light switch. I already have all the wires laid out. I have the brake controller that the customer supplied. I think that they bought most of the stuff from you I may be reusing a brake controller that he had installed on a different vehicle that he took out, I was reading a little bit about you know Diodes and I just feel like this is all computer driven circuits on that brake light switch and if I tag one of them I’m gonna light that dash up like a Christmas tree. For that 2022 Toyota Highlander non-hybrid.

I unfortunately do not know what the color of the brake light switch wire is on a 2022 Toyota Highlander so you would either have to reach out to a local Toyota dealership or test for the brake light switch wire to determine which wire it is. TO test for the wire you'll need to use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 and see which wire lights up only when the brake pedal is depressed.

After you know which wire it is you'll need to disconnect the battery before splicing into it to prevent it from throwing up any error codes and limiting the functionality of the vehicle.

If you don't want to splice into the brake light switch wire or can't find it then you can also install the Roadmaster Universal Stop Light Switch Kit # RM-751000 to simulate the signal. This switch kit will get mounted to the brake pedal post and send out a signal when the pedal is depressed. It's what we typically have to do whenever the brake light switch wire is too thin to splice into.
