Question:
I was curious about converting to an 8 lug axle. I currently have a metalcraft trailer with tandem axles 3500 lb axles 7000 lb total, vault bearing protection with 5 lug chrome 14 wheels with 205/70/14 tires. Brakes are electric over hydraulic. Let me know. I saw a comment about a dexter axle conversion but wasnt sure if that solution was applicable.

It's definitely possible to switch to an 8 lug setup but it does mean you'll be upgrading the weight capacity of your axle, which means you'll also need to upgrade your suspension components to match which may give your trailer more of a stiff ride quality.
I recommend going smaller with a 6 lug upgrade with our etrailer Hub and Drum Assembly # AKHD-655-35-EZ-K so you're only swapping out the amount of lugs used to secure the wheel.
Then to upgrade your trailer tire/wheel I recommend the Provider ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire with 15" White Vesper Spoke Wheel # TA23MR because it's a reliable tire on a classic wheel style. This tire is also rated for 81 mph travel so you won't be limited by speed when you're traveling.
Unless there is a specific reason why you're wanting to upgrade to a larger axle and lug nut size there really isn't as much benefit to it since the strength of the frame is also a limiting factor when it comes to weight.
