On the Jensen an519 rv radio antenna what purpose does the additional ground wire serve, is it necessary for signal of its it more for lightning/ static electricity?

The purpose of the ground on the Jensen Antenna - Rooftop or Side Mount part # AN519 is to eliminate static electricity, as well as protect against energy to the mast if the antenna comes in contact with live electrical wires.
