Great question!

The 18K rating of the Superwinch Tiger Shark Off-Road Winch # W85NF is the static load rating which means that's just the straight up strength of the winch when pulling a load.

If you plan on using this for vehicle recovery then the max weight capacity of the vehicle is 13K. This is lower because you'll be pulling the weight of the vehicle but also against the forces that have the vehicle stuck. Most vehicles fall under 13K though so unless you're using this for a pretty big truck you'll be good to go!
