Why Are Wheel Rims Rated For Less Than The Tires

Question:
I need to upgrade my trailer from 14” to 15” tires and rims. But I’m wondering about E-rated tires. All of the rims I’m looking at are rated only to 2150 pounds. Why are there tires rated for much higher numbers if the rims stop at 2150? I need 15x6, 5 on 4.5. In the end, I’ll be OK with 2150, but I’m wondering about this.

The reason the weight capacity of all the 15" rims you were looking at stops at 2150lbs has to do with the bolt pattern. If you take a look at a higher bolt pattern like 6 on 5-1/2 you'll see the capacity increases because the weight can be distributed between more studs.
Bolt patterns don't affect the fitment of the tire on the wheel rim so they could be used for both patterns and would need to be rated higher to match that higher rated wheel rim.
If you're wanting to stick with a higher rating then you'll want to choose from the "Load Range D" selections as these will have the highest capacity tires. I've attached a link below that has all of our wheel and tire options with a 15" wheels and a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. Out of this selection there are a few options depending on the section width you're needing, so you'll want to see what you already have on your trailer to match it.
For example, the Kenda Karrier ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire with 15" Black Mod Wheel # AM32424 has a section width of 8.070". If your current tires had a smaller section width and you didn't have enough space between the wheel well and the tire you could run into an issue where the tires rub the well.
If you have any other questions or need help finding the style of rim to match your trailer then please let me know.
