Can You Upgrade From 12 to 13 Tires on a 2020 Flagstaff 176LTD Pop Up Camper

Published 10/26/2022

Question:

I have this same pop up trailer want to upgrade to 13inch should I go to a C load or D.. Trailer is 1300 lbs but loaded up it may go over 2000. Also the difference in tire is about 3/4 of and inch in diameter. Do I really need to raise the trailer for that amount. I have that same situation as the guy below. My lug pattern is 5-41/2 inch existing clearance from top of the tire to top wheel well is 4 inches exsisting clearance side of tire to front wheel well is 3 1/2 inches exsisting clearance side of the tire to back wheel well is 3 1/2 inches Can I upgrade to a 13 inch diameter tire from the 12 inch diameter tire is there enough room for the bigger tire? This is on a 2020 flagstaff 176LTD pop up camper. Thank You asked by: MARK B Expert Reply: I do have an option for you to use larger tires, but with only 4inch clearance between the top of your 145R12 tires and the top of the fender on your 2020 Flagstaff 176LTD Pop Up Camper you are already around as tall as you can go. To be able to use a 13inch wheel and tire like the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire with 13inch White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C # AM31951 you will need to raise your trailer. As long as the axle is above the leaf spring then you can do an over-under kit to easily raise the trailer by the diameter of the axle plus the height of the leaf spring stack which will be plenty for adding the larger 13inch tall tires. I was unable to find what which axle was used in your trailer, so if you can tell me the diameter of the axle tube I would be happy to recommend an over-under kit for you. For example the Dexter Over-Under Kit # K71-384-00 is designed for axles with 2-3/8inch diameter axle tubes. If you have a different diameter axle tube then just let me know. I included videos of the products mentioned for you to take a look at.

You may be able to get away with not raising your trailer to upsize your tires to the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer # AM31951 (load range C), but more than likely you would end up needing to raise it. The best way to determine this would be to fully compress your suspension system and measure the clearance that you would have.

Our recommendation would be to raise the trailer, which can be done with an over-under kit like the Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit # K71-384-00 as long as your axle is above your leaf springs. The Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit # K71-384-00 is for 2-3/8" diameter axles. There is also the Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit # K71-385-00 which works with 3" diameter axles.
