Question:

I have a 2004 Xterra that I need a hitch for. Nothing too serious right now, just a way to get the spare tire off the door. My only concern is that I don't think I'll be able to open up the rear hatch with the spare tire there. Is there a way around this?

For your application I recommend picking up the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver # e56KR, the etrailer Hitch Mounted Spare Tire Carrier # e98ZR, and the Kuat Pivot 2 Swing Away Hitch Extender # PVP20B.

This gives you a hitch for your 2004 Nissan Xterra as well as a spare tire carrier that can swing out to the side for complete access to the rear hatch on your vehicle. Normally this type of swing away system is for bike racks but we've found it works great for spare tires as well.
