How Does Brake Controller Install 2020 Chevy Equinox with Tow Package

Updated 01/07/2026 | Published 09/22/2022

Question:

Did Chevy provide a quick connect for a trailer brake controller. I have the 2.0 Lit towing package on my 2020 equinox.

To install a brake controller in your 2020 Chevy Equinox like the Prodigy P3 part # 90195 you'll wire it directly to the brake controller wiring under the dash but there isn't plug or port that you can plug directly in to.

Vehicles equipped with the tow package will have blunt-ended tow package wiring located behind the side panel of the center console on the driver's side next to the gas pedal. You'll be looking for a bundle of 4 blunt ended wires that are blue, black, white/blue striped and white/green stripe.

• Red/Green tow package wire to Black pigtail wire
• Blue tow package wire to Blue pigtail wire
• Black tow package wire to white pigtail wire
• White/Blue Striped tow package wire to red pigtail wire

I pulled of the side cover and the cover under the steering wheel. I am not seeing any wiring that is blunt ended, or the colors described. Jerry

@Jerry Do you for sure have the tow package with a factory 7-way?

@JamesonC Yes, 2020 Equinox 2.0L 7 pin installed. I have used this hitch many times without the brake controller. I just finished installing it, not an easy job, had to splice in a wire on the passenger side for the brake, ran the blue wire all the way back where the fused are located in the rear, and power at the battery terminals. Will be testing with a trailer attached tomorrow.
