Thule Tire Chains for a 2014 Subaru Forester with 225/60-17 Tires

Published 11/21/2013

Question:

I am looking for chains for my 2014 Subaru Forester with 225/60-17 tires. These are listed as fitting, but I have also read that the wheel clearance on these cars is very tight. I would like to confirm the fit. Since the car is AWD do I need one pair or two pairs? Are there speed restrictions for driving with chains? I would assume that in any situation where Id need chains, I wouldnt be driving very fast, but would like to know the limit. Thank you.

The Thule CG9 tire chains, # TH2004205104, only require 9 millimeters of clearance all around the tire so they are Class S rated. That is less than 7/16 of an inch. To determine if there is clearance what you can do is turn the wheels all the way to the right and then measure the closer component to the tire on right side and then the left side. If there is more than 10 millimeters then you can use these chains.

Be sure to consult the vehicle owners manual for specific information on the use of chains including where the best place is to put them. On all-wheel drive vehicles you could put them on the front or back if it is all wheel drive all the time. Otherwise just a set on the main drive wheels is all that is required.

Typically, the speed limit when using chains is 35 to 40 miles per hour but the vehicle may have its own restrictions and you would always go by the lowest rating. Also, if chains are required, 40 mph seems fast to me. I would slow it down 15 or so miles per hour. Safety first! I have included a link to our tire chain FAQ article for you and a link to a video showing a typical isntallation of these chains.
