Brake Controller For A 2021 Subaru Ascent

Question:
I just picked up an Aliner Ranger 12 after having an OEM hitch installed by Subaru on my 2021 Subaru Ascent. The Aliner came with a seven pin plug that fits the socket on the Subaru. Along with the hitch, I got a little harness which I think is supposed to be used with a brake controller. Who installs these and do I need one? The Aliners dry weight is 1362 lbs and it has brakes. My last camper was a Coleman with a dry weight of 900 lbs and it did not have brakes. I have read online about brake controllers but cant figure out what they do exactly. Do I actually need one? How do I install it?

Yes, I would recommend installing a brake controller on your 2021 Subaru Ascent since your Aliner Ranger 12 has electric brakes. Most states require you to have a brake controller when towing trailers that have included brakes. The electric brakes on your trailer will not work without first installing a brake controller.
I would recommend The Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Trailer Brake Controller # RED44FR. This proportional controller will automatically adjust your trailer's braking based on the deceleration of the tow vehicle. This controller has a factory clean install where the main control knob of the controller is mounted on your dash and the main unit is in an out-of-the-way spot.
This controller has a 3-axis accelerometer that measures the deceleration in all directions providing a precise braking and a smooth, uniform stopping action.
The controller can be quickly and easily installed using The Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers # 3062-P. One end of the harness will plug into the built-in port beneath the dash of your vehicle, and the other end will plug into the back of your electric brake controller.
