What is the purpose of a leaf spring rebound clip and where does it go?

Updated 08/22/2022 | Published 08/20/2022

Question:

On double-eye leaf suspension spring packs, there is a sheet-metal clamp on one side which holds some of the leaves together but not on the other side. Is this clamp supposed to be in front of the axle or behind it? Ive seen pics of every imaginable combination including a tandem axle where the clamps on both axles were towards the middle towards the rocker/equalizer. Any chance we can get a definitive ruling on this issue? Maybe an explanation of why that location is best?

The clip you are referring to on the 6-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 6,000-lb Trailer Axles - 26" Long # SP-053275, and other leaf springs, is called a Rebound Clip. This is meant to keep the leaf springs from breaking on hard impact. It is typically mounted about a 1/2" from the end of the shortest leaf. The leaf spring is typically mounted in a way that the clip/band is forward of the axle, however, it does not make a big difference either way so I wouldn't worry about that too much.
