Can I Install the Malone Kayak Hammock Hoist System on a Single Garage Joist
Updated 08/02/2022 | Published 07/31/2022 >
Question:
Im hoping to install the Malone Hoist System in my garage for use with a cargo roof box. My vehicle doesnt need to be underneath the hoist. Compared to the sample photos, my ceiling joists are oriented differently with the short side of the 2x4 facing the floor. How would you suggest installing the system in my space? Im wondering if I need to reinforce the joists in some way? Also, would you suggest hanging the box so that it is perpendicular to the joists, or would it be okay to hang the box along a single joist? Thanks for your help.

Thank you for the details and photo!
To install the Malone Kayak Hammock Hoist System # MPG346 for your kayak I definitely recommend running the kayak perpendicular to the joists and add some supporting 2x4s between the joists in question. Joists are useful for storing stuff but they aren't designed to handle a ton of weight so you want it supported and you want to spread that weight out. If you were to place all that weight on a single joist it would likely start sagging and then you're looking at a whole mess of problems.
So in this case it's worth doing a little extra work up front to make sure everything is nice and secured so you don't have bigger issues in the future.
