Dometic Water Heater Solution to Replace Atwood Water Heater for RV

Updated 07/19/2022 | Published 07/18/2022

Question:

I looking to replace and upgrade my current Atwood GCH6A-9E water heater with a Suburban 6-gal model with LP and 120V sources the Atwood heat exchanger feature is not needed. The Atwood HWH unit is in a class A 2002 Damon Intruder 369 located in the master bedroom lower cabinet in a non-slideout wall. The outside opening dimensions are approx. 15 7/8inch W x 12 1/2inch H. The inside dimensions of the cabinet is roughly 22inch W x 20inch H x 17inch D. Note the depth is measured to a finishedfoot wall panel. I assume that there is approx 2inch of wall thickness present which would indicate that the Atwood model is approx 19inch deep. I have had problems finding information on the Atwood water heater dimensions. So it appears that the outside opening can be enlarged if needed. The most restrictive dimension is the 17/19inch depth. Please let me know if you have something that will work.

While we don't carry the Suburban brand of water heaters we do have the Dometic water heater part # DMC74FR which is essentially the same as the Atwood unit you have now and would work great. It's exact same dimensions as what you have now as well.
