Do I Need A Trailer Brake Controller for Nissan Xterra & Popup Camper?
Published 06/23/2022 >
Question:
Do I need a brake controller? I have a 2015 Nissan Xterra pro-4x. V6 with tow package. I bought the 2020 forest river Rockwood 1640 esp. I’m not sure if I need one but welcome any feedback. Seems like an easy install either way just don’t know if I want to spend the money on it if it’s not needed. Thank you!!

Your popup camper, the 2020 Forest River - Rockwood 1640ESP has a published dry weight of 1,722 lbs. but the OEM has produced it with a brake axle; I highly suggest you install a brake controller and use the campers brake axle even if you are not required by law.
I recommend the Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller, # TK90160 installed using the Plug-In Wiring Adapter, # 3050-P.
You can check the laws in your area and for the locations you intend to travel through as to whether you are required to have a brake controller for the weight of the trailer you are intending to tow. Some states do not require a brake system for single axle trailers until you exceed 3K. Others require it for anything exceeding 1,500 lbs. That being stated, It is not what your tow vehicle is capable of moving, but what you can safely control when towing. A brake controller is well worth the minimal investment.
