Question:

I am considering adding a receiver hitch to the back of my TT for a platform to carry 2 e-bikes. Several posts discuss the vibrations/oscillations that occur at the back of the trailer. My two axel 2604 has two torsion axels and no leaf springs. Is the vibration somewhat dampened by torsion axels vs leaf springs? Also, the existing 1/16 thick thin wall bumper is welded to the I-beam frame. I understand the thin bumper welds can shear if a hitch and weight/vibration is added to the bumper. I am considering cutting off the existing bumper and replacing it with a 4.5” square x ¼ or 3/16 thick sidewall and mounting a receiver tube to it, or using a Curt hitch that bolts onto the I-Beam. Has anyone considered replacing the thin bumper with a more robust tube that could support a receiver/bike rack?

As far as your torsion axles, they should provide you with more overall support than leaf spring alternatives. This is because each side of the axle moves independently without disturbing the other side of the trailer.

To address the thinness of your bumper, we have not heard of any specific examples of neighbors replacing a thin bumper with a thicker bumper replacement. However, a bumper with a thicker wall does provide you with more strength against jarring and motion. As far as the Curt hitch, I am not sure which one you are referring to. Although, if you are considering something like the Curt RV Bumper Hitch - 2" # C19101, this model is designed specifically for 2" x 4" RV bumpers. I went ahead and attached a video that highlights how it mounts.

For a great bike rack for your travel trailer, I recommend using the Swagman E-Spec # S94FR. The E-Spec is designed for brute strength and is engineered to withstand the increased force and torque exerted on the back of your travel trailer. It also comes with an impressive 70-pound per bike weight capacity. As a cherry on top, it also comes with locks that protect both your bikes and the rack itself. If you happen to have fat bikes between 3-5 inches wide, you need the Fat Tire Adapters # S64679. For women's bikes and step-thru frames, you also need a bike frame adapter bar # 64005 for each of those bikes. The adapter provides your frames with a straight, horizontal plane required to attach to the hooks of the rack.
