The aftermarket oil and transmission coolers we offer are intended to supplement OEM coolers that are built into vehicle radiators. These supplementary coolers are typically employed for towing applications. Products like the Derale Series 8000 Plate-Fin Cooler that you referenced, part # D13503, and others that we offer are not intended as replacements for original equipment components.
A police-spec vehicle usually has heavy-duty components in the braking, transmission, electrical and cooling systems to handle the higher stresses encountered in law enforcement applications. You may be able to bypass the existing cooler with an aftermarket unit such as one of the Derale coolers but this may not deliver the same cooling capacity as the OEM part.
Since aftermarket coolers are not vehicle-specific you are free to use as large a cooler as you have space to mount it. Both passive and active fan-equipped coolers are available. Among the largest and most efficient passive coolers we offer is the Derale Class V Plate-Fin Cooler, part # D13614, which has 125 square inches of surface area. This unit uses 1/2-inch NPT (National Pipe Thread) fittings and measures 11 x 11-3/8 x 1-1/4-inches. The included Derale Insta-dapt radiator adapter fits most vehicles with 5/16-inch transmission lines. In some cases, additional fittings or alteration of the OEM lines or hoses may be required for installation. A product video for this item is provided as are two articles on transmission coolers.
