Can 4.80x12 Trailer Tires Be Swapped Out for 5.30x12 Trailer Tires

Updated 06/01/2022 | Published 05/31/2022

Question:

Will 530x12 tires fit on my 4x8ft snow bear utility trailer? It now has 480x12. If it is a question of distance from top of tire to fender how much height would I need if I measured from the 480 tire to fender?

Expert Reply:

A 4.80x12 trailer tire measures 20.6" diameter x 4.8" wide and a 5.30x12 trailer tire measures 21.5" diameter x 5.3" wide. Therefore, you need to account for an extra 1" of diameter and .5" of width. We recommend having at least 3" of tire to fender and 1" of tire to frame clearance. If you do have the space then I recommend the Taskmaster 5.30R12 Radial Trailer Tire part # TT53012C which has radial ply's, a load range c rating (1,050 lbs), and a speed rating m (81 mph).
