Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if chains might affect your ABS/ESP functionality, consult your owner's manual.

These chains are great for giving you a little extra traction in the snow. But if you live somewhere where you experience heavy snow often, you'll definitely want something more heavy duty than cables. Because these cable chains are lightweight and don't take up a lot of storage space, they are also perfect for keeping in your trunk if you occasionally travel through areas that require you to have chains on hand.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's user manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new cable chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow cables that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile cables can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Cable Chains

Installing cable chains is easy.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in the cables.

Cross cable connections have a smooth side that goes against the tire

2. Where each cross cable attaches, you'll notice there is a smooth side and one with an edge. Make sure the smooth side faces in to sit against your tire's sidewall as you drape the cables over your tire.

Making connections behind and in front of the wheel

3. On the front of the tire, feed the cable through the connection loop until it's tight, then use the lever to keep the extra cable from flapping as you drive. Repeat this on the backside of the tire.

Rubber adjusters ensure a tight fit

Rubber adjusters (sold separately) are recommended to help ensure a tight fit. Connect these to the front side of the cable in a star pattern. Make sure the hooks face away from your tire so your wheels don't get scratched.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing cables out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

  • What Does Class S Mean When Picking Out Snow Tire Chains
Class S is the Society of Automotive Engineers' definition of the least amount of space that should be provided around the drive tires of any vehicle to accommodate the use of a winter traction device. A Class S tire chain meets this standard and is designed for use on vehicles with restricted wheel well clearance and are typically smaller in design. Certain newer cars, vans and small trucks, especially those with large, aftermarket tires, may require the use of Class S chains. Basically...

  • Will Tire Chains or Cables for Light Truck Tires Fit the Same Size Passenger Car Tires
Yes, there is a slight difference between passenger car tires and light truck tires when it comes to using tire chains. Tire chain manufacturers will usually list chains/cables for regular tires and different chains/tires for light truck tires so even tires the same size may not be able to fit each others chains/cables. For LT tires, be sure to use chains or cables for light truck tires in size 245/75-16 to ensure compatibility. Cables # PW1046 are for passenger cars, not for light truck...

  • Recommended Snow Chains For 2016 Chevy Express Van 2500
I took a look at the owner's manual for your 2016 Chevy 2500 Express Cargo Van and it looks like snow chains are not recommended because of clearance issues. However, cables are recommended in the manual. For cables I recommend Glacier Cables part # PW2021C that are designed for your tire size and are constructed of a hardened carbon steel. The only downside to cables is that are not easily taken on and off. The only option for actual tire chains that will work for you are the Konig Premium...

  • Tire Chains for Use on a 2013 Chevy Express Van with 245/75-16 Tires
For a one time, week long trip to Colorado Springs I would just go with some cable style chains, # PW2021C with rubber adjusters # PW99. The cables are no a big investment and it sounds like you will only need them a short time anyway so the cables are a good way to go. I have included a link to a video showing a typical installation for you. I recommend doing a test fit once you get the chains so you are familiar with the process ahead of time. Being stuck on the side of the road in a...

  • Tire Chain Recommendations for a 2012 or 2013 Chevy Express 15 Passenger Van
I went by a 2013 Chevy Express Van and put it through our fit guide to find chains. There are two tire size options listed, 245/70-17 and 245/75-16. I will provide some recommendations for each size for you. First for the 245/70-17 if you plan on infrequent use then going with a set of cables, # PW3010C, with rubber adjusters # PW99 would be the way to go. Cables are great if you seldom need chains and/or live in an area where chains are not required by law. For frequent use and/or if...

  • Video For Installing Glacier Chain Cable Snow Chains # PW2021C
If you click the provided link, you can see a video showing the # PW2021C chains being installed on a 2010 Toyota Tacoma. The best bet would be to have your drivers practice installing the chains on dry pavement, so that they will be familiar with the procedure when the time comes. Also, keep in mind that Glacier Chain recommends you DO NOT exceed 25-30 mph while using chains. I would also recommend consulting the owners manual of the vans, and follow any advice or prohibitions regarding...

  • Low-Profile Class S Snow Chains for 2013 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van 2500
The low-profile-type of snow chains referred to in the manual for your 2013 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 Van with LT245\75R\16 tires are referred to as Class S snow chains. This type of chain is designed for vehicles whose wheel wells have limited clearance and where standard chains might interfere with brake or suspension components. Please note the chains you referenced, part # PW2029C, do not fit your tire size. The two linked articles on snow chains will provide you with some useful...

  • Recommended Snow Chains for 225/70R19.5 Tires on 2014 Thor Chateau Motorhome
The Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains # PW2021C referenced in your question are confirmed to fit the 225/70R19.5 size tires on your 2014 Thor Chateau Class C Motorhome and they are what I recommend. I took a look at the online owner's manual for the Ford F-550 chassis that your Thor Chateau is built on and it does state to only use Class S rated tire chains, for which this set qualifies. This means they are designed to be used on vehicles like your RV that don't have a lot of room to work...

  • Tire Chain Recommendation for 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 with LT245/75R16
For a set of tire chains for your tire size 245/75R16 the Titan Chains part # TC2323 have been confirmed as a fit and would be a great option. These chains are easy on the wallet, are pretty easy to install, and will provide great traction. I would also recommend you run these on the front axle as well. They will be easier to install than cables and will provide better traction for turning and stopping. If you did want cables for that tire size the part # PW2021C would be a fit. You...

  • Advisability of Using Tire Chains on a 2010 Chevy Express
If the owners manual prohibits the use of tire chains, I cannot make any recommendations that might contradict that. You might check with your Chevy dealer to see if a Class S tire chain or cable would be permissible. A Class S chain will extend no more than 15 mm (some would extend less) to the inside of the tire and would provide maximum clearance. I have linked you to our selection of Class S chains and cables that are compatible with your tire size. The primary differences between...
