These chains are great for giving you a little extra traction in the snow. But if you live somewhere where you experience heavy snow often, you'll definitely want something more heavy duty than cables. Because these cable chains are lightweight and don't take up a lot of storage space, they are also perfect for keeping in your trunk if you occasionally travel through areas that require you to have chains on hand.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's user manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new cable chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow cables that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile cables can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Cable Chains

Installing cable chains is easy.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in the cables.

Cross cable connections have a smooth side that goes against the tire

2. Where each cross cable attaches, you'll notice there is a smooth side and one with an edge. Make sure the smooth side faces in to sit against your tire's sidewall as you drape the cables over your tire.

Making connections behind and in front of the wheel

3. On the front of the tire, feed the cable through the connection loop until it's tight, then use the lever to keep the extra cable from flapping as you drive. Repeat this on the backside of the tire.

Rubber adjusters ensure a tight fit

Rubber adjusters (sold separately) are recommended to help ensure a tight fit. Connect these to the front side of the cable in a star pattern. Make sure the hooks face away from your tire so your wheels don't get scratched.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing cables out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

One of the cable tire chains broke on the first drive into the snowy road. We had driven only about 20 miles. Some how it got twisted off the tire and around the axle. It had to be cut off.
Small pieces broke off the other cable chain but it remained on the tire.
The cable chains were professionally installed. My truck was the only one to have a problem. Very disappointed in this product.

I received the Glacier Cable chains today. I appreciate etrailer.com's quick shipment of the chains. I haven't used them and hope I don't need to. If I have any issues with this product, I'll be sure to let you know.

We used these on our minivan in a snowstorm in the mountains. The tire cables were pretty easy to put on and take off, and provided excellent traction.

Review from a similar Cable in Tire Chains

Arrived on time and complete. No opportunity to use yet but this is for a 4x4 van that will likely never need them; it's only to be legal during winter mountain driving. The correct tire size isn't listed on the tag but several are and then it says "And many more".
Made in China unfortunately.

They worked when we needed them. We were caught in a sudden snow storm on the I-5 in Weed CA along with hundreds of other cars. We made it off the freeway to a motel and enjoyed the rest of the night in a warm motel room.

I ordered the snow cables for my Subaru 2018 Outback and received them in 3 days! Your customer service is outstanding! I reordered a second set and received them in 4 days. I just had a chance to use them in Atlanta when we had ice and snow. I used only one set on the front and they worked perfectly. i watched the etrailer installation video for a Subaru and it made the easy to install. It took me less then 5 minutes in my garage. (Outside in the snow and ice might take longer). I drove around Atlanta in the ice and snow and the cables performed flawlessly. I plan to buy a set for my daughter. Thanks again!

The product looks good and is well packaged. I need to wait for a good winter storm before I need to use them on my new AWD Honda Pilot TrailSport. So, I don't really know yet how easy they will be to install and how well they will improve traction, but I am planning for success.

I couldn't get my motor home back from repair because of deep snow so looked around for chains and settled on these cable chains. If it wasn't for the -25 wind chill making my fingers numb installing would have been easy. The only problem was one lever lock wouldn't stay closed. I can cure that but hope to never use them again. Great product!

Review from a similar Cable in Tire Chains

I had purchased these in preparation for another New England winter.
I had the chance to use them the other day with poor road conditions consisting of ice and snow.
I fitted the chains on just fine, and secured them with a pair of rubber adjusters.
The first few miles seemed fine for driving, just slightly bumpy, but was expecting it.
Around mile 5 I hit the pavement and the right wheel chains just snapped.
Pulled over and saw my wheel well torn up.
Unless I somehow attached them wrong, these are not the quality I was lead to believe.

Comments
Tire cables are the most economical option for a tire traction device and are typically best for occasion use. For an upgraded tire chain for your Priuss 17565-15 tires without breaking the bank, I recommend the Pewag Servo RS Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains # PWRS64
pewag Servo RS Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains - 1 Pair

because they are easy to install and feature a square, alloy steel chain for better traction.

Great product. Did a dry run in preparation for a trip up to Yosemite in the winter. I purchased these w/ the Titan Chain Multi-Arm Rubber Tire Chain Adjuster (TCMA2) and it fit great on my 2017 Toyota Sienna SE (P235/50R19). The installation video on etrailer.com was VERY helpful.

Good news. The order arrived on the 6th day. To be sure they fit I did a test installation. I installed the Glacier PW1038 snow cable/chains on our 2016 Subaru Forester (225 -60R-17). The chains fit perfectly and on the 2nd notch. (See attached pix).

nice fit: away from the rim and other body parts. The PW105s also helped greatly to snug the package.

Review from a similar Cable in Tire Chains

The chains arrived sooner than expected and were easy to install on my 2015 Subaru Forester. Because of the clearance between tire and wheelwell this chain was recommended. The video, which shows them being installed on a 2015 Subaru Foresters rear wheels, contradicts the owners manual which tells you to install them on the front wheels. The price was very reasonable. The multi arm adjusters I feel are a necessity and should be included with the chains at an additional cost. Finally, I have not tried them out yet but am confident they will give me additional traction in snow. erailer is a very reputable company and I highly recommend them.

Review from a similar Cable in Tire Chains

I have purchased these cable chains for the 2nd time and I am so happy that they came in just in time. The 1st set I bought was used so much this season that I did use them on dry pavement and then on snow and ice. We were going through so many storms every 2 days and some days I didn't take them off like it was advised to. I knew the 1st set were getting warn down quickly so I ordered another set. Well 1 by 1 the chain links started to snap, I am so happy that when they snaped I heard a sound and pulled over and just cut off the remaining part of the snaped one. Then I looked over where the chain snaped there was "no" damage to my car at all. Years ago I had chains and when the chain snaped it riped apart the side of my truck. These are made so if a chain link snapes there is no damage. These cable chains are the best ever, when you have a newer car or truck. Very with these cable chains and will buy another set when needed again. Very happy, Barry.

Worked great for my 2017 Ford F 150 STX with rear wheel drive. We stayed near the west entrance of Yosemite. It snowed about 18 inches of snow the day we arrived and the cables did amazing on highway 41 and throughout Yosemite Valley. Road conditions were pretty bad but I felt really safe driving with these cables. Really good quality chains! Shipping was delayed a day but I ordered them only 7 days before Christmas.

Review from a similar Cable in Tire Chains

I fit the cables to the tires and they're fine in that respect and they appear to be a good and stout. I did have trouble with the lever-lock. When the cables are tight the radius of the cables around the tire make it difficult to hook the lever-lock in the closed position due to the small gap between the "two hooks" on the lever-lock. With the cables matching the curve of the tire the cable does not fit easily between the two "hooks". It would seem just one "hook" would be sufficient as the tension is applied to the lever-lock in only one direction. I don't understand why there is a hook going the other way too. With a bit of deft filing I opened the gap enough to hook the lever-lock in position with much less difficulty. Without the alteration, working that lever-lock closed on a dark, freezing night would have been much less fun.

Comments
Thanks for sharing. Although, the warranty on the chains will not be effective once you have modified them and you can no longer return them, so I cannot recommend filing. At the 2:00 mark of this installation video it shows the installer having a bit of trouble putting the lever-lock onto the cable as you are saying.

Great, the only thing i was curious about was the rubber tie downs. I am asuming the chains will fit tight enough not to need them?

Rubber adjusters, that are sold separately, are recommended, as the chains you purchased do not have self-tightening cams or adjusters. Here are some for size 15-18 inch rims: item # PW105

I tried them on; and they fit well. I'll be ready for my subdivision's icy conditions next time. Thanks for the rapid service, and here are some photos from the test today; though you may not want to use the tension photo, because the clips should have been rotated to the next section

  • What Does Class S Mean When Picking Out Snow Tire Chains
Class S is the Society of Automotive Engineers' definition of the least amount of space that should be provided around the drive tires of any vehicle to accommodate the use of a winter traction device. A Class S tire chain meets this standard and is designed for use on vehicles with restricted wheel well clearance and are typically smaller in design. Certain newer cars, vans and small trucks, especially those with large, aftermarket tires, may require the use of Class S chains. Basically...

The best bet would be to have your drivers practice installing the chains on dry pavement, so that they will be familiar with the procedure when the time comes. I took a look at the online owner's manual for the Ford F-550 chassis that your Thor Chateau is built on and it does state to only use Class S rated tire chains, for which this set qualifies.
