Wiring Needed For Electric Trailer Brakes On a 7,000LB Car Hauler Trailer

Question:

Hello, I recently rewired my 7k lbs two car hauler and it’s my first time doing this type of work. I did the lights and now I’m working on my brakes, I’m using 16 gauge wires, I’m not sure if I do bigger wires? I installed a junction box, should I run the brakes ground wire separate from the ground I’m using for the lights?

For the brake wire on your 7,000lb car hauler you will want to use a 12 Gauge Wire # 12-1-1 for the power wire. The ground wire can either be grounded to the frame or you can use the Jacketed 2 Wire # 12-2-1 if you are not using the frame as a ground. I have included a chart below that has the suggested wiring sizes needed for a 7-way trailer harness.

This wiring will need to connect to your 7-Way Junction Box # HS381-9000 and Breakaway Kit # 20400.
