Question:

Thank you Jon. I have a followup question. Both my bikes (normal men’s bike with no modifications) are 35 lbs each but your literature states the hangout 2 will only accommodate 30 lbs per bike. Is that correct? I can’t imagine you would sell a product that does not fit a normal bike. Will the added 5 lbs really make a difference or alternatively; if I only use the rack for 1 bike will that be a safety issue as well?

To install the Yakima HangOut 2 Bike Rack # Y02637 on your 2018 Tesla Model S you will just need to make the Joe Measurement 14-7/8" and then change the hooks to anchor mode - the straps are long enough though and won't need to be exchanged for longer ones. I'm linking a video I made for the FullBack where I demonstrate what the anchor mode is at the 3:24 minute mark.

You will need to remove the bike rack prior to opening up your hatchback. This is the case for about 99% of trunk mount racks on the market.

Please note if any of your bikes has a kid's frame or lacks a horizontal top tube, like what you see with a standard men's bike, then you'll need an adapter bar like part # Y02531.

Great question! The bikes racks we sell are for a wide variety of applications and situations so some of the bike racks do have restrictions - the 30 lb weight capacity of the Yakima HangOut 2 Bike Rack # Y02637 being one of them. If you are only going to be occasionally taking your bikes across town you can probably squeak by with your 35 lb bikes and be fine but if your plan is to use the rack often or for occasional long trips I definitely wouldn't be pushing the limits of the rack so I'd go a different direction. For longer trips and/or frequent use I recommend the SeaSucker Mini Bomber # 298-BM2006. This is a roof rack style fork mount rack but the great thing about it is the rack comes with vacuum cups (rated for 210 lbs pulling capacity) so you don't have the added expense of a roof rack plus you can easily transfer this rack to other vehicles.
