Replacement Return Spring For Brake Drum On a 1991 16' Hurst Equipment Trailer

Updated 06/01/2024 | Published 01/21/2022

Question:

Hello. I am trying to find a replacement brake drum return spring like the one included in the photo. The only information I have on the trailer is that it is a 1991 Hurst equipment trailer, 16 ft. Nothing else. There are no other markings that i can find. It is a dual axle trailer. The spring is 7.75 inches overall length. Both hook ends are turned downed in the same direction. The coiled spring portion has an overall length of 1.75 inches and is centered in the wire 3 inches from each end.

The Replacement Brake Spring Kit # K71-422-00 contains the correct replacement spring for the one you currently have. It has the same 7-3/4" overall length with 1-3/4" coiled section centered 3" between the ends of the spring.

The Replacement Retractor Spring # 046-119-00 is only 7" in overall length and has a 3" coiled spring centered 2" from the ends of the spring.

I’m trying to rebuild the brakes on a utility trailer I just purchased which has mobile home wheels and axels with Dexter electric brakes. I need the 7 3/4” Retractor spring which is in the kit. I do not need the other spring. Can a person purchase just the 7 3/4 spring, which I need 4 of. It would be much less expensive and most cost effective to do so. If that option is not available can the 7” spring be used instead without any malfunction? Bewildered, Craig M.

@CraigM Unfortunately Craig, we do not carry the 7-3/4" spring by itself. If you tried to just use the 7" spring you would most likely have issues with the operation as it is not a direct replacement for the larger spring.
