For your 2022 Ford Explorer I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # CU78FR. It is a confirmed fit for your Explorer and has a simple bolt-on installation. Curt's gloss black powder coat finish over protective base coat is known to offer superior rust resistance increasing the longevity of your trailer hitch well over the powder coating of their competitors.
If you plan to tow a trailer you'll also need a trailer wiring harness to connect your vehicle's lights to the trailer's lighting system. For this I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118599. This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located inside your trunk, behind the tail lights on both the driver's side and passenger's side. You will need to remove the threshold panel and some of the trunk liner to access the harness. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead with the attached fuse holder up to your car battery. Connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on the battery and insert the provided fuse.
Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed within your trunk or mounted to the hitch or bumper using a mounting bracket like # 18144.
For a great starter ball mount kit I recommend the etrailer Ball Mount Kit for 2" Hitches - 7,500lbs # 989900. It has a 1-7/8" hitch and 2" hitch ball to allow you to tow multiple trailers. It has a 1" or 3" rise and a 2" or 4" drop to keep your trailer level while towing.
