Question:

I am going to buy a hullavator to carry my kayak however, I do not think that the roof rack on my 2016 Nissan Montero will work because the bars do not extend out the required 4 to 8 inches. Please tell me how and what product I need to purchase to make this work.

I believe that you are talking about a 2016 Nissan Murano as I couldn't find anything about a Montero. For factory flush rails I recommend the Thule Evo roof rack system which consists of the following:

47" WingBar Evo Crossbars - # TH711220
Rapid Podium Feet - # TH460R
Fit Kit - # THKIT3141

This will enable you to use a kayak carrier with a lift assist, but unfortunately the Thule Hullavator # TH898 that you're wanting to use isn't listed as a fit for your vehicle. Basically you can't fit long enough crossbars on your roof for the Hullavator to fit without making contact with your vehicle.

Instead I recommend checking out the Malone DownLoader and TelosXL Load Assist # MPG114MD-351XL for a side loading option, or the Yakima Saddle and Roller Carrier with Tie-Downs # Y04083-04082 which allows you to load your kayak from the rear of your Murano. If you're like to add a little more help with loading the kayak from the rear of your vehicle then you can also look into the Yakima ShowBoat 66 Slide-Out # Y04068.
