Do Trailer Spindles Just Weld to End of Axle

Question:

Hello, I have a 50 yr old boat trailer that I’m replacing all the spindles due to wear. The trailer has 1-1/2” Solid square axles. The trailer has a 4” and the spindles look like they were machined before the s were formed onto the axels. Obviously, the existing spindle will need to be cut off so the new spindle can be welded back on. My question is is the proper weld going to be a butt weld ? Also, I imagine that a butt weld will require both the spindle and axel be beveled to accept the weld. That said, how much beveling of the two pieces needs to be done? Keeping in mind, we are welding 1-1/2” of solid steel. Thanks

So the install of a spindle like the # TRU97FR really needs to be done by a welder who has done the job before and has the special jigs for the job. It's a precision job and we can't recommend a method for it aside from taking it to someone who is equipped for it. Otherwise your alignment will be off.
