Brake Switch Wire Location to Hardwire a Trailer Brake Controller on a 1997 Chevy Suburban
Updated 05/22/2013 | Published 05/20/2013 >
Question:
I installed this wiring kit along with the Draw-tite activator III brake controller over the weekend. Everything went smooth and everything works fine except for one thing. When i turn on my right turn signal, the brake controller blinks. It does not blink with the left turn signal. Only the right. also the hazards, but that obviously includes the right turn signal. Im guessing that i tapped into the right taillight bulb wire instead of the brake light switch wire? id rather have you guys confirm this before i head under the dash with a test light plucking at numerous wires haha. Thanks for the help. By the way, the service was great, and the instructions you provided made the install very easy.

It does sound like you have the wrong wire attached to the brake controller red wire. I do know that on a 1993 Chevy Suburban, the wire you need on the brake switch is white. But you will need to use a circuit tester like you mentioned to find the wire. You need the one that only shows power when you step on the brakes. If the wire also shows power with the turn signals on, flashers, or with the headlights on then it is not the correct wire. I have included a video link that might help on the 1993 Suburban I mentioned.
