Question:
Hello, I have a 2007 Lexus GX470, and Im having an issue with my trailer wiring and Ive determined the issue is on the vehicle side. Im using the Hopkins 47345 4 Wire Flat Adapter to go from the vehicles lights wiring to the trailer connection. My issue is that the running lights are working on the vehicle but not at the Hopkins adapter and therefore not going to the trailer. Im not sure how to troubleshoot identifying where the issue is. Is there a fuse on the car side or should I just replace the car side wiring harness? Thanks for the help!

Helpful Expert Reply:
Since your 2007 Lexus GX 470 has the factory 7-way connector then it does indeed seem that there is a blown/missing fuse causing the issue.
Fuse 8 in the engine bay fuse box is the fuse for the lights, so I recommend making sure that the fuse is not blown or missing.
If the fuse checks out, then use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to test the 3 o'clock pin on your 7-way connector and see if there is power on the pin. While you are there go ahead and check that there is no corrosion or debris that got trapped between the connector and the Hopkins 7-way to 4-way adapter # 47345.
If you have power on that pin, then the issue is within the # 47345 and it may need to be replaced.
If you do NOT have power to that pin, then you will need to trace the wire coming out of the back of the connector and look for any damage sections. If you find damage, then that section will need to be replaced with # 16-1-1 and heat shrink butt connectors # DW05744-5.
I included a link to a helpful article on troubleshooting wiring for you to take a look at.
