Question:

what does it mean if I have a factory installed tow package on my 2008 GMC sierra? Im trying to install a tekonsha voyager part number 39510

The tow package on a 2008 GMC Sierra will have a factory installed 7 Way plug on the back of the vehicle. However, all the 2008 GMC Sierras we pre-wired for a brake controller and 7 way, but there will not be an actual port under the dash.

If you do not currently have a 7 Way on the back of your truck, one will need to be added. There are 2 options for this as some vehicle have a round port for a plug and play harness, but some have bare wires that will require a hardwire unit to be install. If you have the factory plug, you will need the Hopkins # 30955. If you have the bare wires, you will need the Pollak # PK11898.

There should be a bundle of wires under the driver side dash that includes 4 wire (White, Red, Black, and Blue). These are typically labeled, but if a controller has been previously installed, the labels may no longer be present. This is not the end of the world though as the colors will match the pigtail # 20127 that will pair with the Tekonsha Voyager # 39510.
