Question:

Ive read generally that friction type sway bars should be loosened before backing up or they can be damaged. How do I check my friction sway bar to make sure it is not damaged?

You are correct that it is not recommended to back up a trailer with friction sway control like the Curt # 17200 connected. Typically the issue you will run into is it can put a bind on the sway bar and either bend the brackets connecting it to the tow vehicle/trailer or could physically bend the sway bar.

I would take a good look at all of the mounting brackets for any fatigue cracks and bending. Next remove the sway bar and look to make sure it is not bent.

As long as you do not see any damage you are fine, and I would recommend starting to disconnect the sway bar before backing up in future.

If you find damage then you can use the # 17200 to replace it.
