Electric Trailer Jack Stopped Working Even After Replacing Trailer Battery

Updated 03/11/2013 | Published 03/10/2013

Question:

My electric jack on my 4600 lb Surveyer trailer that I purchased in July. I last used the trailer in January on a short trip. The jack worked when I arrived at the campsite but not once I returned home. I thought it was a battery issue at first since the battery kept tripping the internal circuit breaker on my battery charger. I installed a new battery recently and still cannont get the jack to run. I can hear one click when I push the toggle to the up position and none in the down position. Any idea what might be happening? Are these jacks repairable or is it easier to replace the entire unit?

The first thing I would check is the wiring to the jack, Check for corrosion, loose or broken wires. You will want to take a close look at the ground connection too. If there are any wires with nicks in the wires and they are touching bare metal, it can be causing a short.

A short could cause the fuse or circuit breaker on the jack to trip and that may be the click you are hearing.

If the wiring, battery, fuses/circuit breakers are all good then there must be something wrong inside the jack and it will need to be replaced. For a replacement, I recommend the Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack # JET-5000.
