Question:
I need to mount this on a ladder rack directly above an upright. Does anyone know the distance between the mounting holes from the hole at the little arm of the J to hole at the big back arm?

I reached out to the manufacturer, Malone, and was able to get the measurement you were looking for on the Malone FoldAway-J Kayak Carrier with Tie Downs # MAL98FR.
According to Malone, the distance between the mounting holes on the photo you sent is 2-3/4 inches center to center.
Another thing you'll want to keep in mind is that the FoldAway-J is designed to fit crossbars that are up to 3-1/2" wide x 1-1/2" tall. I have added a link below to a video review for you to check out as well of the Malone FoldAway-J Kayak Carrier with Tie Downs # MAL98FR.
