Question:
I have 2011 silverado 1500 with 4.7 engine.i have a travel trailer that weighs 4700 lbs..What is better for cooling, the plate fin or the tube fin tran. Cooler. Also what size cooler do i need.thanks

Expert Reply:
The plate-fin transmission coolers are more efficient than the tube-fin transmission coolers. Both types of coolers operate the same, but the plate-fin coolers uses smaller plates to allow more fluid to contact the aluminum surface inside the cooler. More surface contact results in greater heat dissipation.
I have attached two FAQ articles on transmission coolers for you to check out.
When choosing a transmission cooler, we always recommend installing the largest transmission cooler that will fit in the space that you have available. The best places to install a transmission cooler is in front of the AC condenser or radiator. Depending on the space that you have available, I would recommend installing the Derale Series 8000 Transmission Cooler, # D13503 or # D13504.
I also recommend using the GM Snap-In Adapter, # D13035, to attach the return line from the transmission cooler back to the radiator. This will prevent you from having to cut and flare your transmission lines.
I have attached a transmission cooler installation video on a 2011 Chevrolet Suburban for you to check out. The vehicle in this video is different from your truck, but the installation process will be similar and should give you an idea on what is involved to complete the installation.
