How To Test If Trailer Break Away Switch Is Working Correctly
Updated 03/04/2021 | Published 02/28/2021 >
Question:
Sir I have a 2016 Airstream 23 FB. I am looking for a positive way to be sure that the emergency breakaway switch and brakes are actually working. I have pulled the pin with no tow vehicle connected but I dont hear a hum at the brakes telling me the brakes are engages. How can I tell without jacking up the wheels and spinning them? Thanks for any help

To test that you that the break away switch on your 2016 Airsteam 23 FB is working correctly you will need connect the trailer to your trailer hitch, unplug the 7-way connector, remove the pin from the switch, and then try to drive forward.
The tires should rotate a little and then apply the brakes hard enough to not allow the wheels to spin freely.
If your wheels spin freely you will want to make sure that your trailer brakes are adjusted correctly, and make sure the battery of your break away system is fully charged.
I included a link to a helpful article that goes over adjusting trailer brakes for you to take a look at if needed.
