Disc Brakes

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes, and with good reason. Disc brakes deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds - unlike drum brakes, which often show a substantial drop in braking torque at higher speeds. In addition, disc brakes offer a substantially shorter stopping distance than drum brakes.

Disc brake calipers have only one moving part, rather than the many found in drum brakes. This means that there are fewer parts to maintain, fewer parts to get damaged and fewer parts that will require repair or replacement, thus reducing maintenance costs.

Rotors and Hub Spacers

Kodiak's slip-on, cast iron rotors work in conjunction with the included hub spacers to easily convert your idler axle to a disc brake axle. The hub spacers are designed to replace your standard idler hubs, and they come furnished with races and wheel bolts (bearings and seals are sold separately). Once the spacers are in place, the rotors can be slipped on. With a separate rotor and hub, you can easily repair or replace just one element of your brake system without having to junk the whole thing.

Kodiak calipers are constructed of cast iron to prevent flexing. Less flex means more braking torque, resulting in smooth, even braking every time. The corrosion-resistant stainless steel piston is 30 percent larger than standard pistons, ensuring shorter stopping distance and increased torque. In addition, the unique low-drag design of Kodiak's calipers allows the piston to retract farther than in most standard models, giving you a cooler-running brake.

Mounting Brackets

Designed for axles with 4-bolt brake flange configurations, the included mounting brackets are made of heavy-duty ductile iron that is embossed to provide additional threading for guide bolts. The added thread strength ensures a tighter, more secure connection between the caliper and bracket. Another unique feature of Kodiak's brackets is the side-support angle, which guarantees that the load is carried by the bracket, rather than the bolts.

Average Customer Rating:  4.2 out of 5 stars   (11 Customer Reviews)

Trailer disc brake kit includes 2 assemblies with Dacromet-plated rotors, hub spacers, calipers and mounting brackets. Assemblies fit 3,500-lb axles with 10" to 13" wheels. The 8" rotors feature a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern.

These were returned do to the brackets for the calipers didn't let them fit over the rotors. we tried them in two different positions and they didn't fit. Pads sat on top of rotors and would not fit over them. so I returned them.

Replaced drum brakes with these disc brakes. Very easy installation, however, had to get someone that knows what they are doing to bleed and pressurize the brake lines. Attaching the reverse lockout wire to the reverse lights very simple also. Disc brakes has much less movable parts that can "break".

Fast shipping and very easy to install. This is my first time ever installing brakes on a trailer, and instructions were very easy to follow. The entire project was done in about 4 hours, including 2 trips to the store for supplies I should have had ahead of time (marine grease, brake fluid and bolts).

Machining on two of the rotor assemblies were poor with missing or improper countersink holes for rotor mount bolts. Had to countersink like the other two because rotor mount bolts interfered with bracket bolts. One of these rotors also rubbed on the bracket and needed to be machined to prevent the rubbing. Unacceptable quality control on these parts.

one of the brackets was 1/16 too small to fit on the lip. I should have noticed it at installation but didn't. Other than that system works great

Great product, no issues, my truck no longer has to do all the work like it used to.

It was as described, haven't installed it yet

great crafted set up. easy install, shipp;ed fast, priced right. fit nice.

  • Why Is Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2HR35D-8 Limited To 13 Inch Wheels
The reason the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit, part # K2HR35D-8 is limited to 10 inch to 13 inch wheels is because of the hub surface. My contact told me that the rotor size at 8 inches would not have enough mating surface for the wheel and can cause it to wobble if too large of a wheel is installed on the hub. The bolt pattern may be the same but the hub is not designed for a larger wheel. If you have a 14 inch wheel and it has a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern I recommend part # K2HR35D. This uses...

I also linked our page for disc brake kits that work with 12-inch trailer wheels. We have kits rated for both 2000-lb and 3500-lb axles. The best available option for a corrosive salt water environment will be Dacromet-finish brakes like the 3500-lb-rated kit # K2HR35D-8 or the 2000-lb-rated kit # K2HR2D. Stainless...

  • What Bearings Are Used in the Kodiak Disc Brake Kits for 2000-lbs and 3500-lbs Axles
I have information that you might find helpful, but we do not have a schematic drawing of these parts available. With that said, if you've got a spindle from a Hyundai Elantra on this buggy then you're most likely only going to be able use parts that also fit on a Hyundai Elantra- which trailer parts most likely will not. However, I can tell you that the Kodiak # K2HR2D uses # L44649 bearings for the inner and outer bearing, so they're designed for a straight spindle with a 1.063" diameter,...

  • Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2HR35E-8 Availability in Dacromet
We have a dacromet version of the part # K2HR35E-8 that you referenced. For that you would want the part # K2HR35D-8. This kit comes with inner bearing L68149 and outer bearing L44649 plus has a bolt pattern of 5 on 4-1/2 inches. You will need to verify that with what you currently have to make sure this kit would be compatible. Dacromet resists corrosion much more than paint or E-coat.

  • Brake Mounting Flange Bolt Pattern of the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2HR35E-8
The bolt pattern that the brake mounting flange of the # K2HR35E-8 is designed to bolt to is a 4 bolt on 4 inch bolt pattern. This is a very standard bolt pattern. Chances are very good that if your spindles have a 4 bolt mounting flange on them this would bolt right to it.

  • Do Rotors in Disc Brake Kit K2HR35D-8 Replace Hubs on Trailer and Does Dacromet Wear Off Rotor
The rotors included with Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2HR35D-8 are a hub and rotor assembly and they will replace the hubs on the trailer. They are compatible with inner bearing L68149 and outer bearing L44649 so if your existing hubs use the same bearings then the hub and rotor assemblies will fit. Out of all the rotors we have that fit over idler hubs none are 8 inch. The smallest rotor diameter is 10-7/8 inches. The Dacromet on the rotors would eventually wear away but that is not a big...

  • Availability of Hub and Rotor Kit that Fits 3,500 lb Axle that Works with 13 inch Wheel Size
We may have a solution for you, but the Kodiak kit you mentioned will not work with 13 inch trailer wheels. Instead the other solution we have would be a Titan disc brake kit part # K2HR35D-8 which comes with an 8 inch rotor that fits with a 13 inch wheel. As long as you have a standard 3,500 lb axle on your trailer the hubs/rotors of this kit will fit the spindle and work well.

From the hub face to the guide bolt it is about 6.19 inches. From the top to the crest of the caliper it is about 4.71 inches. From the hub face to the brake flange it's about 3.07 inches and from the inner bearing shoulder to the brake flange it's 1.27 inches. I've included a PDF Instruction file to help you get a good visual of the measurements.
