Is the Thule Hullavator Pro Kayak Carrier Compatible with the Rack on a 2021 Subaru Outback Wagon

Question:

I own a 2021 Subaru Outback and I am looking to purchase the Thule Hullavator Pro Kayak Carrier. Can the unit be installed directly on the Subaru rack or do I need to purchase an additional rack. Thanks

The Thule Hullavator Pro Kayak Carrier, part # TH898, is designed to work with a variety of crossbars. This includes factory bars, so if you have factory crossbars on your 2021 Subaru Outback Wagon, then this carrier will fit around them. I've linked to a video review of this carrier for you to look at.

I do want to mention, however, two very important things. First, the Hullavator requires 4" - 8" of extension past the roof rack's feet in order to ensure there is sufficient clearance when lowered. If your factory rails are flush or do not extend this far, then you need to upgrade to crossbars that do. I recommend the Malone AirFlow2, part # MPG216. These aero style crossbars fit around your rails, have a weight capacity of 165 pounds, and have 58" of length. I've linked to a video review of this rack for you to look at.

Second, if you were referring to just the rails that run front to back on an Outback Wagon (not factory crossbars), then that is not enough. You need crossbars that run from side to side to mount a kayak carrier. If you only have the rails and no crossbars, then you will need a roof rack system. The Malone roof rack, again, is your best bet.
