Hitch Extender for use with my Thule Bike Rack
Updated 11/02/2020 | Published 10/30/2020 >
Question:
I purchased a Thule TH9035XT bike rack. Unfortunately I have a 2007 Mini Cooper and the 1 1/4 receiver is recessed in the bumper accessed through the bumper. I cant attach the rack directly since the access through the bumper isnt wide enough to accommodate the pin assembly on this particular bike rack. I need an extender. The hes6 extender is the perfect size but I am worried about weight limits. I have two ebikes, each weighing 50lbs without the battery. Will this work?

I have looked through the instructions and there are no rules about not using your Thule T2 Pro XTB 2 Bike Platform Rack part TH9035XT with a hitch extender like the CR Brophy Hitch Extender for 1-1/4" Hitch Receivers part # HES6.
The use of the adapter however does reduce your vehicle's capacity by 50%. You will have to check your owner's manual for the weight limit on your hitch to ensure you have the capacity.
You have two 50 lb. bikes plus the 50 lbs of the rack after it is removed from the shipping container for a total of 150 lbs. Your hitch would need to be rated for at least 300 lbs. for this setup to work. If your hitch is not rated that high please let me know and I can help with a different solution for you.
