Question:
Hello. I just ordered new bearings, etc for my 12inch dexter axles and noticed my brake shoes are down to about 1/8. When does dexter recommend they be replaced?

You would know to replace brake shoes the same way you would know with a vehicle. If performance is suffering and adjusting the brakes does not help and there are no other issues causing the poor performance it is probably time to change the brake shoes. Some shoes that have pads that are riveted on should be replaced once the pad wears down to that rivet.
Different applications, loads, driving styles and other factors have an effect on how quickly brakes will need replaced. Adjust the brakes every 3,000 miles or when there is a question in the brake performance.
If you examine the brakes and are not sure, you could always take them to a shop that does brake work and get the opinion of a professional.
