For a 2001 Chevy Silverado 1500HD model, when installing front mount hitch # 65028, the factory tow hooks do not need to be removed. I have included a link to the installation isntructions for you to view.
If you have a 1500LD model, the only front hitch is the Curt # 31302 and this hitch requires that you remove the factory tow hooks. I have linked instructions for this hitch for you.
