It sounds like you've recently installed a backup camera like the Rear View Safety Backup Camera # RVS-770614-213 and it's not actually working in reverse; only when in normal gear. Normally something like this is wired into the reverse light circuit so that it only activates when that circuit is powered; it sounds like it's been wired into another circuit-most likely a daytime running light circuit.
Without knowing what kind of car this is or the camera system that you've installed it's difficult for me to know for sure how this is even installed, but I would use a circuit tester like the # PTW2993 to find the circuit that is powered only when the car is in reverse and reconnect the power wire for the camera system to that wire instead of where it's currently connected.
