Hitch for Carrying a Bike on my 2013 Honda Fit and Other Options

Updated 02/20/2020 | Published 02/19/2020

Question:

2013 Honda Fit. In answering a question about voiding the transmission warranty Michael H. Says if they want to use the hitch for a bike there are other options. I have a 3013 and the manual says dont install a hitch. What are the other options? Also, how much does the hitch weigh? I want to know what my total weight versus load capacity of the fit is . Its only a 1.4 liter engine: all the gumption of 2 golf carts. Thanks

I have some good solutions for you! I've scoured the owners manual and found nothing about not installing a hitch. They do indicate that your vehicle should not be used for trailer towing though. With that said. For carrying up to two bikes on a bike rack the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C11064 you looked at is a great choice. It weighs in at about 23 lbs. You could pair this with the Yakima RidgeBack 2 Bike Rack part # Y02457 that weighs in just over 32 lbs and the required Curt Stabilization Strap part # 18050 .

If you want to haul more than two bikes you want to go with the EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 306-X7286 while this hitch has the same capacity as the curt they do not limit you to two bikes the only limiting factor here is the weight rating. Here you could use the Thule Hitching Post Pro part # TH934XTR that you looked at which weighs in just under 40 lbs leaving you with 160 lbs. of capacity remaining so four bikes up to 40 lbs. each.

For other options you can use a trunk mount bike rack like the Thule Passage 3 Bike Carrier - Trunk Mount part # TH911XT which allows you to haul three bikes but if I'm being honest I don't like the trunk mounts because they typically add light scratches at the contact area between the rack and vehicle.

The last option would be a roof rack system this will allow you to haul up to three bikes. The drawback is the expense involved. You need a roof rack system and then three roof mounted bike rack which can add up quickly.

My choice is using one of the hitch and rack options based on the number of bikes you'll be transporting. This will provide you with the easiest and quickest way to get your bikes where you want them.
