Hello, what is the diameter of the steel rod that makes up the hook? Can it be installed on a quarter inch chain? Thanks,

The thickness of the steel that the Curt safety chain loop part # C81288 uses is 9/16 of an inch. The chain you have would have to pass through a 5/8 inch opening to fit into 7/8 inch wide pocket so a 1/4 inch diameter chain would easily work with this.
