In removing the vent cover to you have to remove the inside wrap around to the screen

I believe you're speaking of the garnish or inside trim, which will need removing to install a replacement lid. I've linked you to a help article that shows how to replace a vent lid or cover. I've also linked to a couple of installation videos that will walk you through the whole process.
