V Stop for Sail Boat Trailer with 1/2" Bolt

Updated 09/04/2019 | Published 09/02/2019

Question:

My sailboat trailer King manufacturing has a black bow stantion roller. I want to switch out to a 3 inch V stop that is non marring. The sailboat has a fine bow entry. I’m looking for advice for a good V stop. My bolt hole is 1/2 inch. Can a 3/8 inch be drilled out to 1/2 inch, if needed? Thanks.

While you could drill out the hole on your V stop to accommodate the 1/2" bolt, it would probably lose some of the strength and there's always a chance that you could split the rubber/plastic molding; your best bet in these situations, since they are readily available, is to just use a bow stop with a 1/2" hole already in place.

I recommend going with the CE Smith Y Style Bow Stop for Boat Trailers # CE29554 which is made from a non-marring PVC. This bow stop has a 2-3/4" base and a 4-1/4" span. If you needed a bow stop with a larger base, the Yates Bow Guard # YR7Y44-4 has a 4" base and a 7" span to provide for a wider hull.
