What Causes a 3,500 Lb Axle On Single Axle Trailer To Bend

Question:

I have a new single axle travel trailer with 3500 lb axle rating. The trailer gross weight is 4300 lbs. I have a weight distribution hitch an added a power jack for the front. My first trip and it had less than 500 lbs of total extra weights the axle bent. I had the axle replaced and on the return trip the axle bent. I had removed all weight and put it in my truck. All tanks are empty. I drive 62 to 65 mph on freeways. Manufacturer blames distribution hitch. How can I upgrade or should I just replace axle and remove distribution hitch?

If you are under the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) for your trailer then the axle tube should not be bending. If you are and it is bending then there could be other issues but I have not heard of a weight distribution system causing this. The axle tube actually does not need to be rated for the entire weight of the trailer as around 10-15% of this will be carried on the vehicle. That said, you may need to adjust your weight around so that there is 10-15% on the tongue.

If you do want to upgrade to a larger capacity, 5,200 lb axle which would be the next size up we can offer then I would need you to measure your spring center and hub face for me (see photo). For example, the Dexter Trailer Axle Beam part # 8327816 has a 5,200 lb capacity, 71-1/2" spring center, and 86-1/2" hub face.
