Updated 03/01/2012 | Published 02/27/2012 >
Question:
want to add battery to cargo trailer for Power Tongue jack, replacing the existing breakaway battery. Trailer has 7 blade connector. Do I need a specific type of battery? Are there any special wiring connections/isolators,etc needed for this? Thx

Due to the importance of a properly functioning break away system, it would be best to leave the existing break away battery in place and add an additional battery for powering the jack.
A standard automotive or small deep-cycle 12 volt battery would work just fine for you. I would recommend using a battery box like # 329-HM327BKS to protect the battery from the elements.
The 12-volt accessory circuit from the 7-way would run to the positive terminal of your auxiliary battery, and then to the positive terminal of the break away system battery. Using a battery isolator like part # PK5231201 is not required, but would certainly be a good idea to prevent the battery on the tow vehicle from being inadvertently discharged.
I edited a diagram to give you an idea of how this would be laid out. I have also linked you to our selection of battery boxes.
