does this rack have to be put into roof rack rails or can it be put straight into the roof gutters into a factory drilled hole?

The Rhino-Rack Roof Rack for Factory Tracks # Y02-490B-NT is designed to mount on tracks that sit on the roof like you see in the attached picture. Please note that if you have the factory tracks on your 2011 Land Rover Range Rover Sport the only confirmed fit from Rhino-Rack is the Rhino-Rack RSP Roof Rack # RSPT508.

If you don't have the roof rails then you can either use parts # RRVA137B-2, # RLTP, # RTS508, and # RRVA-FK1-2 to add the roof rails and the same type of roof rack that you initially inquired about.

Otherwise we have other roof racks like the Thule WingBar Evo system, parts # TH711520, # TH710501, and # TH145116 which uses clamps to secure to the frame of your Land Rover.
