The only time you need a data connection on your device to use the Curt Echo, part # C51180, is when you're downloading the app to control it. Afterwards the Echo connects to your phone with Bluetooth and data isn't necessary.
Your phone still functions as it normally would since it isn't actually using a data or voice network to operate. The only feature you'll lose is since the phone is paired with the Echo via Bluetooth you won't be able to talk on the phone with a Bluetooth device such as your vehicle's media system or a headset.
Theft of the Echo is something we brought up with Curt when we first learned of the Echo. Unfortunately, there isn't anything to keep anyone from taking the device right out of your vehicle's 7-way and walking off with it. It's certainly small enough and easy enough to grab. This is why we highly recommend unplugging the Echo and putting it inside the vehicle when you're not towing.
