The online owner's manual for the 2016 Smart fortwo does not offer much information about recreational flat towing other than to note on page 171 that when towing a car with automatic transmission the transmission must be in neutral (position N), the battery must be connected and charged and the vehicle's automatic locking feature should be deactivated.
