I took a look at the owner's manual for the 2001 Ford F-150 5.4L 4WD Super Crew and the maximum trailer weight that can be towed with this vehicle is 8,300 lbs with or without a weight distribution hitch if you have an automatic transmission. It mentions your tongue weight should always be between 10-15% of the weight of the trailer. I do recommend verifying the capacity in your printed copy of the manual.
If you need a trailer hitch for the Ford, I recommend Curt Class V trailer hitch receiver part # C15303 because the installation is easier compared to the other options for your truck. It does not require drilling and allows you to keep your 20 inch or smaller spare tire in the stowed position while the hitch is installed. The Curt hitch is designed to tow up to 2400 lbs of tongue weight but you want to stay in the 10-15% tongue weight range that the owner's manual suggests.
If you need to replace the factory 7-way I recommend Reese part # 74682.
