Your 2016 Jeep Cherokee has a towing capacity of 2,000 lbs unless it has a 3.2L engine with the Trailer Tow Package; if this is what your Cherokee has then its capacity is 4,500 lbs according to the online copy of the owner's manual I took a look at.
If your Jeep has the towing package you are likely to be able to tow a trailer on the longer side.
For a trailer hitch that fits your '16 Cherokee I recommend the etrailer Hitch # e73ZR because it has a concealed crosstube and is a bolt-on installation that will not require drilling into your vehicle's frame to install.
This Class III, 2" trailer hitch is almost entirely hidden behind your bumper, as you can see by the accompanying photo of this hitch installed on a 2016 Jeep Cherokee. The hitch has a black powder coat finish to protect it from corrosion and also has a 5,000 lb towing capacity and 500 lb tongue weight capacity. The Curt # C13172 is made in the USA and comes with a lifetime warranty.
If you do not have the tow package and need to add wiring to power your trailer's lights you should use the highly reliable T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118605; you can see this being installed on a 2016 Cherokee in the install video I linked.
I also recommend checking out Ball Mount Kit # 989900, which is for 2” hitches and may fulfill your towing needs in one tidy package; two ball mounts - one with a 3/4” rise or 2” drop and the other with a 2-3/4” rise or 4” drop – along with a 1-7/8” hitch ball, a 2” hitch ball, and a pin and clip.
You can use the link to the help article on ball mounts I've added to determine if this kit will give you the correct amount of drop or rise.
