Question:
I just bought a 2014 Dodge caravan. Is it capable of towing a small U-Haul or a boat.

Expert Reply:
The 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan has a fairly high towing capacity of 3,600 lbs so you should not have any issues towing most small boat or U-Haul trailers. However, the 3,600 lbs towing capacity of your Grand Caravan will decrease if you have 3 or more passengers. For example:
- 1 to 2 Persons & Luggage = 3,600 lbs Towing Capacity
- 3 to 5 Persons & Luggage = 3,350 lbs Towing Capacity
- 6 to 7 Persons & Luggage = 3,000 lbs Towing Capacity
Also, for vehicles equipped with "Fold-in-Floor" seating, the Towing Capacity must be reduced by 100 lbs.
In order to tow a trailer with your Grand Caravan you will need a trailer hitch, wiring harness, and ball mount/hitch ball. For a trailer hitch, I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 75579 because it is the least visible (see photo) and it is the easiest to install. For a trailer wiring harness, I recommend the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C56331 because it offers plug and play installation. It is also the most reliable option we have for you. If either of the trailers has brakes, then you will also want to use the # ETBC7 Universal Upgrade Kit as well as a brake controller of your choice like the Tekonsha # 90195.
For a ball mount/hitch ball, I recommend the etrailer.com Ball Mount Kit for 2" Hitches part # 989900 which should have everything that you need to get started. In addition to the 7-way, you will also need a brake controller if either trailer has brakes for which I recommend using the Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller part # TK90160.
I have attached install/review videos on the above components for you as well.
